August 23, 2026 marks 13 years since I became an Independent LegalShield Associate…again.
“Again?” you say.
Well, that “again” is actually an important part of the story!
You see, I first found LegalShield around 2001.
At the time, the way it was presented to me felt very “Amway-ish” (if you know, you know). There was too much secrecy, too much focus on recruiting, and not enough focus on what the service actually did for people.
That wasn’t how I wanted to do business, so I walked away.
Then I Found It Again
Fast forward to 2013.
I rediscovered LegalShield through something completely different: identity theft education.
Now THAT got my attention.
I loved learning how scams work, how identity thieves operate, where consumers and businesses are vulnerable and, most importantly, teaching people how to protect themselves.
That opened the door.
But there was another big difference the second time around: the person who brought me in.
My new sponsor was a gem! He was kind, caring and genuinely helpful. He showed me that this business could be built in a way that felt right to me, by leading with education, service and integrity.
With him in my corner, I was convinced I was going to knock this thing out of the park.
Sadly, I didn’t get nearly enough time with him. He passed away from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, not long after I got started.
But the example he set for me stayed.
What Got Me Here Isn’t Necessarily What Kept Me Here
Identity theft education may have opened the door, but what made me stay for 13 years was something bigger.
The mission.
Because underneath all the plans, marketing, compensation plans and business terminology is a mission I genuinely believe in:
Giving everyday people better access to legal help and tools to protect themselves.
Most people don’t have a law firm they can simply call when something comes up.
And that can be especially important when you own a business.
A business owner may have a question about a contract. An employee issue. A customer who won’t pay. A lease they don’t understand. A vendor dispute. A letter that needs to be written. Or maybe they just want someone to look at something before they sign it.
And today, “business owner” can mean a whole lot more than a company with an office, employees and a sign out front.
There are millions of small businesses, home-based businesses, solopreneurs and side businesses. People are consulting, selling online, providing services from home, turning hobbies into income and building businesses around skills they already have.
Many of them may not think of themselves as someone who “needs a lawyer.”
Until they do.
And too often, the first question isn’t “What should I do?”
It’s “How much is it going to cost me just to ask?”
I’ve always thought there was something wrong with that.
Over the years, I’ve also seen LegalShield operate with a customer-first attitude and integrity that matters very much to me.
And here’s one of my favorite numbers:
Net Promoter Score, or NPS, is basically a measure of how willing customers are to recommend a company to someone else.
In one report, LegalShield’s score outpaced the cited benchmarks for Amazon, Google and Apple. IDShield’s score was even higher, topping the benchmarks shown for Netflix and PayPal, too.
I think that says something pretty remarkable about how members feel about the service.
And after 13 years of watching what happens when real people actually need help, that matters to me far more than any marketing slogan ever could.
Thirteen Years Later
My business has evolved.
I’ve evolved.
I’m still fascinated by scams, identity theft and consumer protection.
I’ve also become increasingly focused on helping small-business and home-based business owners understand the legal risks that come with running a business, including the ones they may not even realize they have.
And I love working with employers who want to give their employees access to legal and identity protection benefits.
There’s another side of this business that I don’t talk about as often, but it’s part of the story too.
The business opportunity itself.
Yes, LegalShield is also an opportunity for someone to become an Independent Associate and build a business of their own.
The irony isn’t lost on me, considering that an overly recruitment-focused approach was one of the things that drove me away the first time.
But I learned there’s a very different way to do it.
I’m not interested in secrecy, hype or chasing people around trying to convince them to join something.
I am happy to talk openly with someone who is looking for a flexible business opportunity, wants to know what I actually do, how it works and whether it might be a good fit for them.
After all, somebody once gave me that opportunity.
And 13 years later, I’m awfully glad they did.
What Hasn’t Changed
Whether I’m talking to an individual, a family, a home-based entrepreneur, a small-business owner, an employer or someone considering becoming an Associate, the reason underneath all of it really hasn’t changed:
I like helping people understand things they didn’t know they needed to know, and giving them tools that can make life a little easier when something goes wrong.
That’s what brought me back in 2013.
That’s a big part of why I’m still here in 2026.
And I’m pretty proud of that.
The Greatest Compliment
After 13 years, referrals are still one of the greatest compliments someone can give me.
If you’ve ever thought:
“I know someone MeShawn should talk to…”
I’d love that introduction.
Maybe it’s a small-business owner, home-based business owner, solopreneur or entrepreneur who would benefit from having affordable access to a law firm.
Maybe it’s a business owner or HR professional looking for meaningful legal and identity protection benefits to offer their employees.
Maybe it’s someone who is concerned about identity theft, scams or fraud and wants to know more about protecting themselves or their family.
Maybe it’s an individual or family who simply wants better access to legal help when life happens.
Or maybe it’s someone looking for a flexible way to build a business of their own who might want to learn more about becoming a LegalShield Independent Associate.
You don’t need to know which plan they need.
You don’t need to know whether they’re a fit.
You don’t even need to know exactly how I might be able to help.
That’s my job.
If your thought is simply:
“You know who you should talk to? MeShawn.”
That’s enough. ❤️
Here’s to year 14.
